There are so many things to appreciate recently at Grundy Center Elementary! In the past few weeks, we have celebrated National School Librarian Day, National Paraeducator Day, and Administrative Assistants Week. We thank Dorinda and all of the paraeducators who help our school run smoothly and thank Mrs. Biederman and Mrs. Saak, who work hard to put the best books in the hands of our students! Thank you!

A few weeks ago, the third grade teachers put together a “book tasting” event where students could explore new book titles and genres and enjoy a little snack. This event was sponsored by GNB Bank. We thank them for their support!

Fourth grade students planted a tree on the playground and received their own tree seedlings to bring home on Earth Day with help from Green Belt Bank and Trust. This has become an annual event for the oldest students in our building. Thank you!

We are celebrating the many volunteers who help out at Grundy Center Elementary during the week of April 29 to May 3. We have sent out invitations for volunteers to come and eat lunch with a classroom, so if you are interested, please contact the office at 825-5461. Thank you for your time!

Mrs. Lechtenberg’s students recently completed a service learning project involving “Brave Bags.” The students wrote letters asking for donations, helped order and organize materials, and delivered bags to the hospital, so children who are in the hospital have necessary items and activities to keep them busy. Way to go, Mrs.Lechtenberg and students!

Congratulations to the fourth and fifth grade students on a great showing at the Battle of the Books competition! Thanks to the teachers and students for putting in the extra hours for this fun event!

The self-assessment of multi-tiered systems of support (SAMI) have been completed by a small group of school and AEA staff. The results are being used to plan professional development over the next two years at Grundy Center Elementary. The main focuses will be to implement a social-emotional student screener and tiered levels of support, continue work on creating formative assessments for literacy benchmark standards, and implement a tier II math intervention and system of support.

Lechtenberg and students!

Recently, three staff members and Mr. Sammons attended a conference on Proactive Discipline for Reactive Students in Des Moines. The staff left the conference with ideas to implement into professional development for teachers next fall.

The first through fourth grade Spring Fling arts nights were held in mid-April. Thank you to Mrs. Leverton for sharing student artwork and Mrs. Steenhoek

for sharing students’ musical talents! Thank you to all of the families who attended Spring Fling 2019!

The new ISASP (Iowa State-Wide Assessment of Student Progress) tests have been completed. Some parts looked very familiar, but other areas, such as essay writings, were more complex. We will use the data from these tests to help improve our instruction and better prepare students for next year’s assessments.

It has been a FANTASTIC year at Grundy Center Elementary. Let’s finish strong!

Yours in education,

Brian Sammons,

Elementary Principal
