American history students had a grand opportunity to talk with a Submarine Base Commander during third and fourth hour on April 22nd, 2013. Chuck Hasbrouck was in the United States Navy for 31 years and has experience well beyond the classroom and submarines. He talked with the students on what life is like under the big oceans and how he fell in love with his profession.
At the beginning of class, Hasbrouck put an assortment of topics for students to ponder about and let them take control of their conversation as the hour went on. Both classes were curious about nuclear deference, in which Hasbrouck explained what it was and used current day examples to engage students. The examples he used were very relatable for the students. Many students were amazed when they realized how big submarines actually are in comparison to every-day objects such as a football field.
Today, Hasbrouck is retired and still teaching Submarine Commanders how to operate the submarines on missions. Hasbrouck had just finished with a class in Omaha, Nebraska and was on his way home when he came to Wellsburg to visit family. He had talked with the students about how he teaches these courses for weeks then he gets to take the new commanders out on the submarine for a week to let them have hands on training before they are able to take command of their own submarines in the United States Navy. He explained how that even though the other areas in the department of defense had already become equal for, both, males and females, the submarine division had not up until three years ago. Currently, there are several females that are out performing the males and the Navy is strongly encouraging women to apply for their program.
This was a great opportunity for students to learn about the Navy and submarines from a professional. Staff and students would like to thank Chuck Hasbrouck for taking time out of his schedule to come and talk with Grundy Center students. We appreciate the knowledge he has given us and we wish him all theluck with the new class of commanders.

Written by Marissa Brown and Emily Greiner, 8th graders
On Monday, April 8th the eighth graders went to Des Moines to visit the State Capitol and Historical Museum. While at the State Historical Museum, the eighth graders saw exhibits such as Rarely Seen: Cool Stuff from the Museum, the Delicate Balance, and You Gotta Know the Territory. In the Rarely Seen exhibit students looked upon interesting items such as George Washington’s hair, Abraham Lincoln’s glasses, an iron lung, and a neon sign from National Travelers Life Insurance Company. Next in the Delicate Balance exhibit students learned about the Prehistoric and Native American eras. Within the You Gotta Know the Territory exhibit students examined articles of history dealing with Iowa before it was added to the Union in 1846.Visiting the Historical Museum was a great opportunity for the novice 8th graders to learn more of their state’s history.
At the State Capitol students were educated about the infrastructure of the capitol, how the capitol building ties in with law making, and careers within in the capitol. They were informed about the opportunity to become a page in their senior year of high school, and some hope to pursue this in the future. Students were also able to view the senate debating about issues such as Medicaid and animal abuse. They were informed that as an Iowa citizen they could sit in as the Senate and House of Representatives debate issues any time. With the golden dome, doll collection, lights, mosaic artwork, paintings, and hand painted walls, the students realized just how proud they should be of their state capitol. The capitol is a place students will have to know how to use in their future lives.

The Battle of the Books competition starts out with a written test on which Grundy Center scored a 62 out of 66 points. Lauren Wegmann was our recorder. We got first place in the written test and advanced to the final round.
The oral competition began when they asked us our first question. Joseph Janssen was the speaker and said, “I was the one most comfortable talking in front of people, so I got that job.” The other teams were right behind us. One time Montezuma got a really hard question that we did not know. They came out with a wild guess. They got it right, so we did not have to answer it. We then got first place in the oral test.
We went to University Book and Supply for the pizza with the guest author, Sarah Prineas. She discussed with us our favorite books and hers. We thanked her for coming.
“It was fun yet hard to believe that we had won for the second year in a row. You’d have thought we would be the underdogs considering we had just started two years ago,” stated Jack Kelley.
Adam Hoy said, “ I just wanted to run and run last time. This time it was just like, been there, done that.”
Joseph Janssen said, “It was tough beating Timothy Christian, but we knew if we could just keep the lead that everything would be all right.”
“The other teams were right behind us during the oral round,” Andrew Warnell stated.
“It was very hard to sit still, yet we won the competition,” Lauren Wegmann reported.
“In the oral round it was kind of hard because the other teams could steal our question, but we could steal theirs,” Ella Hommel said about the oral round.
The members of the team: Lauren Wegmann, Adam Hoy, Jack Kelley, Joseph Janssen, Andrew Warnell, and Ella Hommel would like to thank their alternates Titus Catron, Molli Craig, Maleah Brown, Libby Ross, Tyler Schmitt, and Izabella Ash for helping the finalists study for the competition.
They would also like to thank the coaches Andrea Doubet and Mary Rickert for all their hard work with the team. We would have never won without them.
By the 4th and 5th grade Battle
