School Improvement Advisory Committee Meeting

August 18, 2009   7:00 p.m.

Attending:  Shannon McIntire, Larry Marske, Rhonda Neher, Shelly Hook, Amanda Stefl, Kendra Fowlkes, John Stevens, Lisa Miller, Cass Murra, Steve VanderPol

Mr. Stevens welcomed every one and thanked them for being present.  Each member was then given a draft copy of the Annual Progress Report.

The group spent an hour discussing the data included in the report.  The administrative team explained how to interpret the test scores.  Teachers had analyzed the data at the end of the school year, and the building level teams had identified the goals.  The SIAC members approved the suggested goals.

The discussion also included ideas on how to distribute this data.  Members thought putting it on the website and having a few copies in each of the offices would be good.  There will also be segments included in the local paper.

Mrs. Murra then spent a few minutes to update the group on the Department of Education Site Visit that will be held April 6-8, 2010.  This committee will meet again in March and more specific information will be shared at that time.

Mr. Stevens again thanked the team for their time and willingness to actively engage in the discussions this evening.

School Improvement Advisory Committee Meeting

March 10, 2010   5:00 p.m.

Attending:  Bob McIntire, Darlene Marske, Paul Neher, Amanda Stefl, Kendra Fowlkes, John Stevens, Lisa Miller, Cass Murra, Steve VanderPol

Mr. Stevens began by welcoming everyone and introducing Mr. Bob Munson.

Mr. Munson gave a 25-minute multi-media presentation regarding the 1-to-1 computer initiative.  All high school students will have access to a laptop computer beginning August 16.  The Grundy Center School Technology Plan was shared with the committee.  The team was able to ask questions, give input, and offer suggestions.

Next, Mrs. Murra provided an update on the upcoming Site Visit.  The SIAC members were given the interview questions and the schedule.  This committee will have their interview with the visiting team on Tuesday, April 6 from 5:00 – 6:15 p.m. in the high school library.  There will also be members from the Vocational Advisory Committee and the Wellness Committee joining us for this interview.  Any questions may be directed to Mrs. Murra or Mr. Stevens.

The principals and superintendent then shared progress on the district goals.  A handout was provided that outlines these goals.  The district uses the following categories for setting goals:  Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment; Culture & Climate; Community & Promotion; and Facilities & Infrastructure.

Before the meeting was adjourned, Mr. VanderPol reviewed the Iowa Core Curriculum.  To date, the district has completed a baseline Self-Study.  The School Improvement Team (district leadership team of K-12 teachers and administrators) is currently working on creating the implementation plan.  This is due to the Department of Education before July 1, 2010.  This plan will be shared with SIAC at our summer meeting along with the 2009-2010 Annual Progress Report.

The last topic of discussion was a brainstorming session of how to get more members attending these meetings or staying better informed.  Several suggestions were given.  All members will be called a day or two before the next meeting.  Also, the minutes and handouts will be mailed a day after the meeting.  These documents will also be posted on the school website under the “School Improvement” button.

Members were thanked for coming and encouraged to participate in the Site Visit interview on April 6.
