Meet Mrs. McGarvey!
Hello! My name is Rochelle McGarvey and I am excited to start my first year as a school counselor in Grundy Center. I am a native of Cedar Falls but spent many years living in Colorado. I have a Bachelors degree in Psychology and Minor in Women's Studies from Metropolitan State University in Denver, CO. I was employed for 3 years at a youth residential treatment center and found my passion for working with kids.
Four years ago, my family and I moved back to Cedar Falls to enjoy life with our families. I graduated in 2016 from UNI with a Masters in School Counseling and have been working in various school districts as a substitute teacher and school counselor. I'm thrilled to start my career as a GC Spartan!
My husband is also a native of Cedar Falls and we have 2 boys, 10 & 7, as well as a 2 year old Labrador named Red and a cat named Nico. We love to be outdoors and spend our weekends camping from Spring till Fall!
Grundy Center School Counseling Framework
Grundy Center Comprehensive School Counseling Program is modeled after the American School Counselor Association (ASCA)
The National Model is guidance for our program to ensure that ALL students personal/social development, academic development and career planning are addressed, K-12. ASCA National Model School counselors provide services to students, parents, school staff and the community in the following areas:
Direct Student Services Direct services are in-person interactions between school counselors and students and include the following:
School counseling core curriculum: This curriculum consists of structured lessons designed to help students attain the desired competencies and to provide all students with the knowledge, attitudes and skills appropriate for their developmental level. The school counseling core curriculum is delivered throughout the school’s overall curriculum and is systematically presented by school counselors in collaboration with other professional educators in K-12 classroom and group activities.
Individual student planning: School counselors coordinate ongoing systemic activities designed to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans.
Responsive services: Responsive services are activities designed to meet students’ immediate needs and concerns. Responsive services may include counseling in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.
Indirect Student Services Indirect services are provided on behalf of students as a result of the school counselors’ interactions with others including referrals for additional assistance, consultation and collaboration with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations.
There are often times that I meet with students individually or in small groups. The following is similar to what I post in my office about confidentiality between students and school counselor.
